Doctor for Tourists in Dubai: 5 Common Holiday Health Problems

You’ve landed, checked in and the view from your balcony on Palm Jumeirah, in Dubai Marina or above JBR beach is everything the photos promised. Then the second morning arrives with a pounding headache, an upset stomach or a child who woke up hot and miserable. If you’re searching for a doctor for tourists in Dubai, you’re far from alone, and you don’t need to leave your room to find one.

Winter is Dubai’s busiest season. The city welcomed a record 19.59 million international overnight visitors in 2025, and in December 2025 it passed 2 million visitors in a single month for the first time. More visitors, warm days, rich food, long flights and packed itineraries mean the same handful of health problems turn up in hotel rooms again and again. This guide covers the five we see most often, what you can do yourself, the warning signs that mean you need a doctor, and how to get a DHA-licensed doctor to your hotel, apartment or villa, day or night.

Key takeaways

  • The five health problems tourists face most in Dubai are stomach upsets and food poisoning, heat exhaustion and dehydration, sunburn and skin reactions, colds, flu and fever, and ear infections and minor injuries from pools and beaches.
  • Most are minor and can be treated in your room, but they can still cost you days of a short holiday.
  • A Vitals Healthcare doctor usually reaches hotels in Palm Jumeirah, Dubai Marina and JBR within 30–45 minutes, 24/7.
  • A hotel doctor visit costs AED 349 and a home visit for residents costs AED 299, with no hidden call-out fee.
  • Chest pain, breathing trouble, stroke signs, heatstroke or a seizure are emergencies. Call 998.

Why tourists get sick in Dubai, even in winter

Dubai has strict food-safety and hygiene rules, so most holiday illness has less to do with the city and more to do with what travel does to your body:

  • Long flights and jet lag leave you tired, dehydrated and more likely to pick up a cold.
  • New and richer food, from hotel buffets to Friday brunches, can upset a stomach that isn’t used to it.
  • The sun is stronger than it feels. November days still average around 31°C, and the UV index stays high enough to burn even when the air feels mild.
  • Pools, beaches and water parks bring ear infections, cuts and sprains, especially for children.
  • Packed days mean people push through early symptoms instead of resting, so a small problem becomes a big one.

The 5 most common health problems tourists face in Dubai

1. Stomach upsets, food poisoning and traveller’s diarrhoea

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) calls travellers’ diarrhoea the most predictable travel-related illness. In Dubai it usually comes from a change in diet, a rich buffet or brunch, or a meal that simply didn’t agree with you, rather than from unsafe food. Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and diarrhoea.

Many cases settle on their own. Food poisoning caused by a toxin often clears within 12–24 hours, viral stomach bugs usually last two to three days, and untreated bacterial diarrhoea can last three to seven days. Until it passes, take small, frequent sips of water or an oral rehydration solution from any pharmacy, rest, and eat plain food once you can.

Call a food poisoning doctor in Dubai if you can’t keep fluids down for several hours, you see blood in your vomit or stool, you have a high fever or severe stomach pain, you feel dizzy when you stand, or the person who is ill is a young child, pregnant or elderly. Our doctor can examine you in your room, treat the dehydration and nausea, and arrange IV fluids if you need them.

2. Heat exhaustion and dehydration

Beach days, desert safaris and long walks between attractions, followed by cold air-conditioned rooms and late nights, leave many visitors more dehydrated than they realise. The UK’s NHS lists the signs of heat exhaustion as tiredness, dizziness, headache, nausea or vomiting, heavy sweating with pale, clammy skin, cramps in the arms, legs and stomach, a high temperature and strong thirst.

Get into the shade or a cool room, lie down with your feet slightly raised, sip cold water or a rehydration drink and cool your skin. The NHS says heat exhaustion is not usually serious if you can cool down within 30 minutes. To prevent it, drink more than usual, wear light, loose clothing, avoid the midday sun between 11am and 3pm, and go easy on alcohol.

If you’re still unwell after cooling down, our nurses can give IV hydration in your villa or hotel room after a health check.

For heat exhaustion treatment in Dubai, call us if you don’t feel better within 30 minutes of cooling down, or if you keep vomiting and can’t keep water down. A doctor or nurse can check how dehydrated you are and, where it’s right for you, give IV hydration in your room. Confusion, hot skin that has stopped sweating, fast breathing, a seizure or collapse can mean heatstroke. That is an emergency: call 998.

3. Sunburn, heat rash and skin reactions

Many visitors from Europe and colder countries are caught out by Dubai’s winter sun. The UV index falls from very high in October to moderate by December, then climbs back to very high by February, so you can burn on any day of the year, and especially on reflective sand and water. Heat rash, insect bites, reactions to new sunscreens and flare-ups of eczema are common too.

For mild sunburn, cool the skin with a shower or damp towel, drink plenty of water, use an after-sun or aloe vera gel and stay out of the sun until it heals. Use SPF 30 or higher, reapply after swimming, and keep babies out of direct sun.

Call a doctor if the burn blisters over a large area, you have a fever, chills, a headache or feel faint, a rash is spreading or swelling, or a baby or young child is burnt. A doctor can treat the pain and inflammation, check for heat illness and prescribe the right cream or medicine.

4. Colds, flu, sore throats and fever

A long flight, crowded airports and attractions, broken sleep and dry air-conditioned rooms make it easy to pick up a cold or flu, and Dubai’s cooler months are also its flu season. Expect a sore throat, a blocked nose, a cough, body aches, tiredness and sometimes a fever.

Rest, fluids and simple fever relief help most adults recover within a week. Children often run higher temperatures, and a fever at 2am in an unfamiliar hotel room is one of the most common reasons families call us. If you need a doctor home visit for fever in Dubai, our doctors see adults and children of all ages and can check for ear, throat and chest infections, prescribe treatment and advise you on whether it’s safe to fly. We also give flu vaccinations at home.

5. Ear infections and minor injuries from pools, beaches and water parks

Hotel pools, the sea at JBR and the water parks on Palm Jumeirah are a big part of a Dubai holiday, and so is swimmer’s ear. This infection of the outer ear canal is more common in children, and symptoms usually appear within a few days of swimming: itching, then ear pain that gets worse when the ear is tugged, a feeling of fullness and sometimes discharge. It usually needs prescription ear drops, so it won’t clear with painkillers alone. Keeping ears dry after swimming helps prevent it.

Ear pain after swimming is one of the most common reasons families call a doctor to their hotel.

Cuts from coral or broken shells, sprained ankles on The Walk and bumps from water slides are also common. Our doctor can clean and dress wounds, assess sprains and tell you whether you need an X-ray. Deep cuts that won’t stop bleeding, suspected broken bones and any head injury with vomiting, drowsiness or confusion need hospital care.

Other reasons visitors call us include migraines, urinary infections, allergies, a hangover after a late night and running out of regular medicine.

Here’s a quick guide to what to do:

Our 24 hour doctor home visit in Dubai costs AED 299, and we can add lab tests at home, home nursing and physiotherapy when you need them. If you need time off, the doctor can issue a sick leave certificate after examining you. Hosting family this season? Read our health guide for visiting parents.

Dr Samman Butt and her team have come to our rescue on two occasions when we needed emergency medical care in Dubai for multiple members of my family. Dr Samman and Physiotherapist Nayana are extremely helpful and continue with their aftercare long after the treatment is over. They truly care about their patients and have such a kind and friendly approach. Their aim is to give you long term health benefits and to avoid invasive options such as surgery when it is not entirely necessary. Our MRI and blood reports arrive instantly with the analysis and full report including recommendations. There is no waiting period and their team keep you informed and up to date 24/7 with instant replies on WhatsApp. Cannot thank them enough for always arriving at our hotel in a timely manner.

Stomach upsets and food poisoning, heat exhaustion and dehydration, sunburn and skin reactions, colds, flu and fever, and ear infections and minor injuries from pools, beaches and water parks.

Yes. Our doctors visit hotels, serviced apartments, holiday homes and villas in all three areas, usually within 30–45 minutes, 24 hours a day.
