It’s the morning after a long brunch, a rooftop party or the New Year’s Eve fireworks. Your head is pounding, your stomach is turning, and you have a family day out, a desert safari or a flight to catch. From the UAE National Day long weekend to New Year’s Day, the holiday season is Dubai’s busiest time for celebrations, for residents and visitors alike, and hangovers come with it. If you’re looking for hangover treatment in Dubai, this guide explains what actually helps, what doesn’t, and when a hangover IV drip at your hotel or home is worth it.
We’ll be honest from the start: no drip, pill or “cure” can make a hangover disappear instantly, and time is the only certain fix. But the right care can ease the worst of it, especially dehydration and nausea, so you lose less of your holiday. And sometimes what feels like a very bad hangover needs a doctor.
Key takeaways
- A hangover comes from several things at once: dehydration, poor sleep, an irritated stomach, inflammation and the by-products of alcohol.
- No hangover cure is scientifically proven. Water, food, rest and time are the basics.
- A hangover IV drip rehydrates you quickly, which helps most when you’re vomiting and can’t keep fluids down.
- The Vitals Healthcare Hangover IV Drip is given by a DHA-licensed nurse at your hotel, home or office, 24/7.
- Confusion, slow or irregular breathing, seizures or being hard to wake are signs of alcohol overdose, not a hangover. Call 998.

Why hangovers peak during Dubai’s holiday season
From early December to mid-January, Dubai’s calendar is packed. The UAE National Day long weekend, the Dubai Shopping Festival, festive brunches, New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day all fall within about six weeks, and the city fills with visitors. For residents, it’s also the season of office parties and friends and family flying in.
Brunches that start at midday, late nights, little sleep, rich food and time in the sun all add up. Add an early flight or a family day out the next morning, and one hangover can take a big bite out of a short holiday.
What causes a hangover?
A hangover isn’t just dehydration. According to the US National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), several things happen at once:
- Dehydration. Alcohol suppresses a hormone (vasopressin) that helps your body hold on to water, so you pass more urine.
- Poor sleep. You may fall asleep quickly, but your sleep is broken and you tend to wake early.
- An irritated stomach. Alcohol increases stomach acid and irritates the stomach lining, causing nausea and stomach pain.
- Inflammation throughout the body.
- Acetaldehyde, a toxic, short-lived by-product your liver makes while breaking down alcohol.
- Congeners, compounds found in larger amounts in darker drinks.
- A mild “withdrawal” as the alcohol wears off, which can leave you anxious and restless.
Symptoms usually peak as the alcohol in your blood falls back towards zero, and they can last 24 hours or more. They include headache, tiredness, thirst, nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, muscle aches, sensitivity to light and sound, and anxiety.
Hangover treatment at home or in your hotel: what actually helps
For a mild hangover, simple steps work best:
- Drink water steadily. Small, frequent sips are easier to keep down than a big glass. If you’ve been sick, an oral rehydration solution from a pharmacy can help.
- Eat something plain, such as toast, crackers, rice or a banana, once your stomach settles.
- Rest. Sleep as much as you can and keep the curtains closed if light bothers you.
- Stay out of the midday sun until you feel better. Lying by the pool while dehydrated only makes things worse.
- Be careful with painkillers. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) can be harmful to the liver when alcohol is still in your system, and aspirin or ibuprofen can irritate an already upset stomach. Ask a pharmacist or doctor what’s safe for you.
- Skip the “hair of the dog”. Another drink may dull your symptoms for a while, but it only delays them.
Hangover myths that don’t work
- Coffee or a cold shower may make you feel more awake, but neither cures a hangover.
- “Beer before wine” rules. The order you drink in doesn’t matter. The total amount of alcohol does.
- Sports drinks and “detox” products. Research hasn’t linked electrolyte levels to how bad a hangover feels, and your body normally restores its electrolyte balance on its own. Fluids still help if you’re dehydrated.
The same goes for the long list of supplements sold as hangover cures. In 2022, researchers at King’s College London reviewed 21 placebo-controlled trials of hangover remedies, from herbal extracts to supplements. The evidence for every one of them was of very low quality, and the researchers concluded that the surest way to prevent a hangover is to drink in moderation or not at all.
Here’s a quick guide to the most common symptoms:
| Symptom | Why it happens | What helps | When to call us |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thirst, dry mouth, dark urine | Fluid loss | Small, frequent sips of water or oral rehydration solution | You can’t keep fluids down |
| Nausea and vomiting | Irritated stomach lining | Sips of fluid, rest, plain food once settled | Vomiting keeps coming back, or you can’t keep water down for several hours |
| Headache | Dehydration, poor sleep, inflammation | Water, rest, a dark and quiet room; ask a pharmacist about pain relief | The headache is severe or unusual for you |
| Tiredness and brain fog | Broken sleep | Sleep, food and time | You still feel very unwell after 24 hours |
| Dizziness | Dehydration | Sit or lie down, drink slowly, eat something | You faint, or the dizziness doesn’t settle |
Hangover IV drip in Dubai: what it can and can’t do
A hangover IV drip gives fluids, electrolytes and vitamins straight into a vein through a small cannula, usually over 30–45 minutes. Because the fluid goes directly into your bloodstream, it rehydrates you faster than drinking, and it doesn’t depend on your stomach keeping anything down.
That’s when a drip helps most: you’ve been vomiting, you can’t keep water down, and you need to be on your feet for a flight, a meeting or a family day out. Rehydrating quickly can take the edge off the thirst, dizziness and exhaustion that come with being dehydrated.
It’s just as important to know what an IV drip can’t do. It doesn’t remove alcohol from your blood, “detox” your liver or make you safe to drive. The NIAAA notes that no hangover remedy has been scientifically proven, IV treatments included. Think of a drip as a fast, comfortable way to rehydrate, not a cure.
Is a hangover IV drip safe?
An IV drip should only ever be given by a licensed healthcare professional after a health check. Before starting, our DHA-licensed nurse asks about your health, medicines and allergies, and checks your blood pressure and pulse. A drip may not be suitable if you’re pregnant or have heart or kidney problems. If your symptoms suggest something more than a hangover, such as food poisoning or a head injury, the nurse will arrange for a doctor to see you instead.

Here’s how your options compare:
| Rest and fluids | Hangover IV drip in your room | Doctor at your hotel or home | Hospital emergency department | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | A mild hangover with a free day ahead | Dehydration, vomiting, needing to get going quickly | Vomiting that won’t stop, possible food poisoning, symptoms you’re unsure about | Signs of alcohol overdose, head injury, chest pain or breathing problems |
| How it works | Water, plain food, sleep and time | A DHA-licensed nurse gives the drip in 30–45 minutes after a health check | A DHA-licensed doctor examines you and gives a treatment plan | Full emergency care, including tests and scans |

Staying safe and within the law over the holidays
Dubai welcomes visitors who drink, but the rules are stricter than in many countries, and they apply to residents and tourists alike:
- 21 is the minimum age. UAE law prohibits selling or serving alcohol to anyone under 21.
- Drink only in licensed venues or private homes. Drinking alcohol in public places or unlicensed locations is prohibited.
- Never drink and drive. Under the UAE traffic law (Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024), driving under the influence of alcohol can bring a prison term and a fine of AED 20,000 to AED 100,000, along with suspension of your licence. Take a taxi or use a ride-hailing app.
- The morning after counts too. A hangover affects attention, decision-making and coordination, and after a heavy night alcohol may still be in your blood. Don’t drive until you’ve fully recovered.
To make the next morning easier, eat before and while you drink, alternate alcoholic drinks with water, pace yourself, and plan how you’ll get back to your hotel before the night starts.
When a hangover is something more serious
A hangover is unpleasant but passes. Alcohol overdose, often called alcohol poisoning, is a medical emergency. Call 998 for an ambulance if someone who has been drinking shows any of these signs, listed by the NIAAA:
- Confusion or stupor
- Trouble staying awake, or can’t be woken
- Vomiting, especially while very drowsy
- Seizures
- Slow breathing (fewer than 8 breaths a minute) or gaps of 10 seconds or more between breaths
- A slow heart rate or clammy skin
- Very low body temperature, or bluish or pale skin
Don’t wait for every sign to appear, and don’t let them “sleep it off”. Blood alcohol can keep rising after someone stops drinking, and a person who is very drunk can choke on their own vomit. Stay with them and keep them sitting up, or if they’re lying down, turn them onto their side. Coffee, cold showers and walking don’t help.
Call a doctor if you can’t keep any fluids down for several hours, the vomiting won’t stop, you have severe stomach pain or blood in your vomit, or you still feel very unwell after 24 hours. If your symptoms started after a meal rather than a night out, read our guide to food poisoning in Dubai.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best hangover treatment in Dubai?
For most hangovers, water, plain food, rest and time work best. If you’re vomiting, can’t keep fluids down or need to be on your feet quickly, a hangover IV drip from a licensed nurse can rehydrate you at your hotel or home. No treatment cures a hangover instantly.
Can I get a hangover IV drip at my hotel in Dubai?
Yes. A DHA-licensed nurse can give the drip in your hotel room, serviced apartment, villa or home anywhere in Dubai, including JBR, Dubai Marina, Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai and Business Bay, 24 hours a day.
How long does a hangover IV drip take?
The drip itself usually takes 30–45 minutes, plus a few minutes for the health check beforehand. Read more about how long IV therapy lasts.
Does a hangover IV drip really work?
It rehydrates you quickly, which can ease thirst, dizziness and tiredness, especially if you’ve been vomiting. It doesn’t remove alcohol from your body, and there’s no strong scientific evidence that any hangover remedy, IV drips included, works as a cure.
Can I book a hangover IV drip on New Year’s Day or a public holiday?
Yes. We work 24/7, including weekends and public holidays such as Eid Al Etihad and New Year’s Day. Demand is high on New Year’s Day, so call or WhatsApp as early as you can.
Is it safe to take paracetamol for a hangover?
Be careful. Paracetamol (acetaminophen) can be harmful to the liver when taken with alcohol, and aspirin or ibuprofen can irritate the stomach. Ask a pharmacist or doctor what’s safe for you.
When should I go to hospital instead?
Call 998 straight away for confusion, trouble staying awake, seizures, slow or irregular breathing, bluish or pale skin, a head injury, chest pain or blood in vomit. These need emergency care, not a drip.
Don’t let a hangover take over your holiday.
